Maryonna Chambers, a 22-year-old native of Jackson, Mississippi, has made history as the first graduate of pg电子下载 State University’s College of Agriculture and Applied Science 3+1 Program, a unique collaboration with Mississippi State University.
Chambers credits the program with broadening her educational horizons and significantly enhancing her marketability. “I was able to meet new people that I now call friends, and my teachers from both schools were great and helpful whenever I needed guidance,” she said.
The 3+1 Program’s structure exposed Chambers to diverse learning environments, teaching styles, and industry-specific training, giving her a competitive edge. Immediately after graduation, she secured a supervisory position at a food processing company in Illinois.
“I believe others can benefit from the program by increasing their chances of getting a job,” Chambers said. “It also helps expand a person’s learning style in the workplace.” She attributes her rapid career advancement to the program’s emphasis on adaptability and real-world preparation.
Chambers discovered the program during an pg电子下载 State campus tour. Intrigued by the opportunity to study at both a historically Black college and university and a predominantly white institution, she embraced the challenge. “I believe it makes me more marketable because I have experience from both institutions,” she explained. “I was able to learn how different schools handle students in a classroom setting.”
Dr. Victor Njiti, chair of the Department of Agriculture, emphasized the program’s long-term benefits. “The 3+1 Program is an excellent opportunity for students to gain diverse academic experiences and enhance their career prospects,” he said. “By completing coursework at both pg电子下载 State and Mississippi State, students receive a well-rounded education that prepares them for the evolving agricultural industry.”
Chambers found unwavering support from her family and mentors. “My sister and mother have always encouraged me to keep going in my career and never give up on my dreams,” she said. “All of my teachers from pg电子下载 and Mississippi State pushed me to be the best I can be, and my academic advisors helped me navigate college successfully.”
As the program’s first graduate, Chambers is paving the way for future students to take advantage of this unique academic opportunity. With her dual-degree education and practical experience, she is well-positioned to make a significant impact in the poultry industry and beyond.
